The British Museum, located on Great Russell
Street, contains an outstanding collection of mainly archaeological and ethnographic
objects gathered from civilisations throughout the world.
Exhibits include the The Rosetta Stone which was instrumental in deciphering Egyptian
hieroglyphics, sculptures from the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos located in present
day Bodrum, Turkey and the Elgin Marbles taken/rescued/stolen from the Parthenon
in Athens. While visiting the museum do not miss the spectacular covered Great Courtyard.
The museum is open from 10:00am until 5:30pm daily with closing time extended until
8:30pm on Thursdays and Fridays. Admission is free. The nearest tube station is
Tottenham Court Road.
